Expressive Photography – Part 2
The Colour of Meaning
Understanding Colour in Landscape Photography
Alister Benn is one of the few people actually writing about the emotional and therapeutic sides of landscape photography, and in The Colour of Meaning he once again aligns his heart and his head. This is a book that will challenge your whole relationship with something so familiar, that we take it for granted.
As an outstanding photographer and educationalist in his subject, Alister Benn has through his published work, but especially Luminosity & Contrast and the latest The Colour of Meaning, added substance to his philosophy of his art. These two books have been instrumental in improvement to my personal output, to my confidence as a landscape photographer, and to my understanding of the beauty of those magical moments when light meets nature.
Alister has a rare blend of artistry, technology, humility, and openness – not a common combination in photography. Alister celebrates seeing with one’s mind, one’s eye, and (often) one’s camera. I’ve enjoyed his writing as well, with a good blend of the technical or the emotive. It’s clear that Alister loves his craft, and you will find the love in virtually every page of his books. Buy one, i feel confident that you won’t be disappointed.
Alister opens up his heart and mind in the Color of Meaning as he takes you along his journey from photographer to Expressive Photographer. The series of essays and commentaries about finding deeper meaning in our photos should be part of your journey to grow your photography. I find myself revisiting many of the topics and then seeing the growth in my photos as a result of learning from Alister. Too often we believe it is in gear or software, the better investment maybe in growing your skills with the Color of Meaning and Luminosity and Contrast.ere
